Personal conclusion: The headphone listening experience is enhanced fixed with speaker/room simulation software, I have been trying out Waves Abbey Road Studio 3 for the last few days, and it really takes the soundstage out of your head like NO headphone can do. Songs always sound better on speakers! It's just a fact, that's how we've heard sound since the beginning of time, with environemnt reflections and cross talk, and headphones just don't recreate this experience we've evolved to have. yes, but they still can't do anything that would ruin the mix on speakers. Sure, they are tuned in frequency response to approximate a good room, but they lack everything else, like crosstalk, HRTF stuff, and room reflections, leading to unnatural music experience in my opinion.Ĭounter point: most modern mixes take headphone listening in to account. Headphones, on the other hand, have none of these effects.
In theory, a speaker reproduces the sound of instruments precisely, and the room + YOUR HEAD modulate the sound, the same way they would if that instrument were being played right in front of you, so you get a realistic experience. I have come to the conclusion: headphones are an incomplete system. I don't need anything more than my falling apart AKG K550.
Headphone quality doesn't seem to do much for me. I've been thinking about this for a long time, largely because I haven't been able to enjoy any pair of headphones for a few years.
